Let’s recap the URBIS24 Workshop: Showcasing a Digital Twin for Urban Heat Mortality Risk Assessment
The National Observatory of Athens, a CARMINE partner, presented at the URBIS24 Workshop. The event, hosted by the European Space Agency (ESA) in Frascati, Italy, in September 2024, gathered a diverse community of urban policymakers, Earth Observation researchers, service providers and various end-users.
Iphigenia Keramitsoglou, Research Director on Earth Observation from the National Observatory of Athens, participated in the first Session, chaired by Claudia Baranzelli (Program Manager, Laboratory for Geospatial Analysis, OECD) and Efren Feliu Torres (Climate Change Adaptation Manager, TECNALIA Research & Innovation), on Urban heat dynamics and soil sealing assessments for resilient planning. She notably delivered a presentation titled From Space to Lives Saved: A Digital Twin for Heat-Related Mortality Risk Assessment in Urban Areas, which sparked insightful discussions on innovative solutions for building urban resilience.
The presentation showcased how Digital Twin DT-HEAT, developed as part of the CARMINE Project, leverages cutting-edge Deep Learning techniques and diverse urban data sources to estimate heat-related mortality. This powerful tool integrates real-time data streams, urban indicators, and socio-economic variables, offering both long-term projections and real-time insights to manage heatwaves more effectively.
DT-HEAT represents a significant step forward, empowering policymakers and public health authorities to implement targeted Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and allocate resources strategically, while reinforcing urban resilience to extreme heat.
