The CARMINE project is dedicated to strengthening urban and social resilience across eight metropolitan regions in Europe. It promotes a participatory approach that integrates research, planning, and social innovation to help cities adapt to climate change and support informed decision-making at the European level. The Italian case study focuses on the Metropolitan City of Bologna and is coordinated by project partners, the National Research Council of Italy (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche – CNR) and CAAB (the Agro-Food Centre of Bologna).

How can wildfire protection be improved under climate change conditions in the Barcelona metropolitan area?
To address this question, a workshop was held at the Collserola Library (Vallvidrera, Barcelona) on 23 October 2025. Organised jointly by the Pau Costa Foundation and Mitiga, this event, the second organised within the framework of the Barcelona Living Lab for the European project CARMINE, brought together representatives from different sectors in the field of wildfire management.

The second workshop of the Living Lab for urban heat and health resilience in metropolitan Athens took place on 8 October 2025 at the offices of Greece’s National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET). The Living Lab, launched through a first workshop in December 2024, is working to identify transformative solutions for urban heat and health resilience, and builds on climate adaptation and resilience work taking place in Metropolitan Athens and the Region of Attica.

Birmingham has been declared the UK’s first official Nature City, as part of a UK-wide programme working to connect urban communities to nature. The award recognises Birmingham City Council’s commitment, alongside its partners, to transform life for communities by making nature and green spaces more abundant, accessible and embedded in urban planning.

On 19 June 2025, CARMINE project partners from the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) Europe network actively contributed to key discussions on climate resilience at the Mediterranean Forum for the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change. Taking place in Bologna (Italy), the event brought together Charter Signatories, regional and local leaders, policymakers, experts, and practitioners to explore best practices in climate adaptation and resilience in the Mediterranean area and beyond.

On 23 October 2025, the University of Bucharest hosted a workshop titled “Climate Services – A Strategic Tool for Strengthening Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Challenges in Metropolitan Areas of Romania.” It showcased experiences from the CARMINE project.

The CARMINE project proudly organized a special session at the 4th World Conference of the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE), bringing together global experts, researchers, policymakers, and academics in a transdisciplinary dialogue on ecological solutions for sustainable urban development.

The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) and the EU-funded CARMINE project announce the launch of an innovative digital tool integrating a range of data for urban heat risk mitigation and resilience.

In climate adaptation, collaboration is key. That’s why the CARMINE project has placed Living Labs at the heart of its work across eight European metropolitan regions, spaces where local stakeholders can come together to co-design, test, and refine solutions for climate resilience. But meaningful engagement doesn’t stop at the workshop door. Ensuring continuity, inclusivity, and long-term participation requires a flexible approach and a digital one.

CARMINE was recently featured at the “Geodynamics and Geospatial Research” conference at the University of Latvia, highlighting how CARMINE is combining high-resolution data and advanced modelling to inform climate resilience strategies and support evidence-based decision-making in vulnerable urban and rural areas.
